‘Pinocchio’ Review: Guillermo del Toro’s Best Movie in a Decade Is a Stop-Motion Triumph

IndieWire | 10-15-22

“Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” reimagines the classic fantasy tale through the most beautifully-made stop-motion animation in years, a powerful and life-affirming father-and-son story about acceptance and love in the face of pain, misery, and fascism, and the filmmaker’s love of monsters in what is easily his best film in a decade.

The film is set in 1930s Italy, as fascism is sweeping the nation. We see how dangerous ideologies spread quickly and quietly at first, and what starts with just the town’s blacksmith being a bit too obsessed with uniformity and order gives way to hordes of fanatics screaming for Il Duce, kids being sent to boot camps, and everyone who is different being excluded – or worse.

Bubble Blabber Reviews The Shivering Truth

BUBBLE BLABBER | 5-12-18

The Shivering Truth produced by Vernon ChatmanThe Shivering Truth is a constant boilerplate of societal trends that usually counts towards some sort of comeuppance for the central character of each bit. For the fat girl in school getting her bra snapped it’s being used as ham slices for the kids at school, for the depressed guy looking to take his own life, it’s the ironic nature of his constant failures at death that usually leads to some sort of good, and for a doctor that’s able to control the Butterfly Effect, what happens when those butterflies get minds of their own?

The Bleakness & Joy of “BoJack Horseman”

The New Yorker | 8-8-16

“When “BoJack Horseman” débuted, in 2014, it didn’t look particularly original. It was the hundredth series about a middle-aged man—well, a horse, but still—who did bad things. It was the latest scathing portrait of the downside of fame. It was the newest streaming dramedy: yet another adult animated alt-comedy meta-sitcom.

In an anti-antihero frame of mind, I took much too long to catch up on what turned out to be one of the wisest, most emotionally ambitious and—this is not a contradiction—spectacularly goofy series…”
